Stone Restoration

Repairing brickwork instead of replacing bricks

The Remmers restoration mortar system was specially developed for supplementing mineral building materials or replacing these materials. Why then replace damaged bricks?

Mineral or plastic modified-based stone substitution mortar is still highly important as part of preserving and restoring measures of natural stone parts. This is due to a number of benefits that these systems have compared to other binding agent variants for stone substitution mortars. This includes the following:

  • excellent adaptability to a large number of technical, in particular physical-mechanical properties,
  • good optical adjustment capability,
  • reliable and extremely simple processing and
  • an unrivalled price-performance ratio.

The Remmers restoration mortar system was specially developed for supplements in mineral building materials or replacing these materials. As the composition of natural stone building materials can vary greatly (structure, pore space, colour, grain etc.), and the stone substitute mortar needs to be matched to the subsurface for long-term measures, Remmers supplies a wide range of adjustment options.

A dual philosophy is followed here:

Firstly, Remmers offers an extensive system of standard products that can be used for a wide variety of applications in terms of variation. Thanks to its structured design, installers and planners can select the optimal stone substitution mortar for the standard case.

Secondly, it is possible to develop and supply special products for special applications. To this end, it is necessary to not only know the properties of the stone, but also the relevant damage mechanisms that have led to the loss of the original substance.

If the damage mechanisms have already been identified, Remmers will work together with the installers and specifiers involved on the project. If scientific research still needs to be done, this can be carried out and evaluated by Remmers Technical Support, a team of specialists from different disciplines.

This means that Remmers can provide adequate restoration mortar for almost all requirements that mineral subsurfaces make with respect to the optical, chemical and physical-mechanical aspects.

Processing

The angular preparation of damaged areas or flaws corresponds to the traditional method when supplementing mineral surfaces with a ‘classic’ restoration mortar. Remmers supplies the proven restoration mortar for this application method which has been tried-and-tested for many decades.

Originally from the stone sculpture field and now long since anchored in our minds as art, the demand for suitable materials for substance-preserving supplements now also includes façades. Here, too, it is of course necessary to adapt the colour, structure and physical-mechanical behaviour of the applications to the respective stone.

Increasingly, there are calls for applications that run out to zero for preserving monuments and also façades, which is why Remmers developed ‘RM pro’ that allows this processing method to be applied without having to compromise on the range of individual adjustments stated above and below.

In general, color adjustment can be satisfactorily achieved by pigmentation in the factory. For this a color can be specified from the extensive color collection or an equivalent standard color card (eg RAL), or a swatch can be sent with the desired color.

The strength values, compressive strength and elasticity module, are very important for the durability of a stone substitution measure. Similar to joint and grouting mortar, stone substitution mortars should also assume the function of the ‘weakest’ element in the masonry. Firstly, they should act like invertebral discs so that they can absorb and dissipate tension in the stone. Secondly, the material added ‘later’ should always assume the weaker position, so that it can act together with the original material as a preferred wear layer.

However, steps should be taken here to ensure that the durability of the mortar is not compromised to a level that is unacceptable to the owner of the building. One of the main tasks when developing restoration mortars is to find an optimum between the ‘weakest element’ and durability.

To approximate the optimum as far as possible for every stone substitution, Remmers supplies restoration mortar as standard in 2 strength classes:

'soft' M5 (4 to 8 N/mm², depending on the grain)

'normal' M10 (10 to 13 N/mm², depending on the grain)

The grain of a stone substitution mortar has a significant impact on the structure and therefore also on the roughness and shine of the finished stone substitution. To create stone substitutions that meet the requirements as precisely as possible, Remmers restoration mortars have three grain areas as standard:

'fine“, < 0.2 mm

'medium', < 0.5 mm

'coarse', < 2.0 mm
