Elbe Philharmonic Hall, Hamburg

Hamburg Germany Facade Repair Funcosil FC Pro Joint Mortar FM FS Selectmix SBL Combi WR Brick facade Listed building

The Elbe Philharmonic is a concert hall in Hamburg. Despite construction delays and the fact that the planned costs were exceeded, the Elbe Philharmonic achieved nationwide recognition even before completion.

The 110 m high building is now the new landmark of the Hanseatic city. It is located in the HafenCity district on the right bank of the North Elbe.

The Kaispeicher A, a former cocoa, tea and coffee warehouse built in 1963, served as the base for the modern glass construction. The entire building has 26 storeys, with the eighth floor being located behind the old brick façade.

The Elbphilharmonie houses concert halls, a hotel, a restaurant, several condominiums and a parking garage.

Furthermore, at a height of 37 m there is the Plaza, a publicly accessible space via an 80 m long escalator, which serves as a viewing platform with a tour of the entire building. The Plaza is also the access level for the concert hall foyer and the hotel.

In the year following the opening, 850,000 people attended concerts in the Elbe Philharmonic Concert Hall, 4.5 million people visited the square as a viewing platform and over 70,000 people took part in guided tours.

Short description
On the façade surfaces of Kaispeicher A, there was a lot of efflorescence and lime aging, both signs of penetrating moisture. The damage patterns indicated a lack of frost resistance as well as no protection against driving rain. The listed façade required extensive frost and moisture protection, but was not allowed to undergo any visual changes.
