Created from readily available sustainably sourced non-durable woods, Accoya® is designed to match or exceed the properties of the very best tropical hardwoods. Highly durable and stable, Accoya excels in any climate in tough applications.Accoya offers a multitude of finishes, with coatings looking brilliant and lasting longer than other wood types. Accoya is a truly sustainable choice that helps you make a difference to the challenges facing the world.

Enhancing the performance of Accoya®

Remmers believes that wood is a natural resource that must be protected. Accoya® windows and doors designed and manufactured using Remmers solutions or maintenance care kits will provide an extended service life with low maintenance. This is based on case studies and live window exposure since 2006. Remmers Induline premium coatings have been developed to enhance the longevity and protection of quality wood products and have proven to be a perfect match with the properties Accoya®. The effectiveness, longevity and ecological safety of Remmers Induline premium coatings are regularly tested by reputed institutions to guarantee performance. Remmers will work with you every step of the way to ensure that you have the best coating systems possible to meet your exact requirements.

14 year outdoor exposure test

Case study

Windows made from Accoya® wood with various coatings from Remmers have been exposed to natural weathering in the Netherlands for 14 years with no maintenance at all – and the results show no natural coating degradation or loss of performance.

The window was mounted in a framework rig to mimic real life installation in a natural vertical position with no shelter at the Accsys test field in Arnhem, with no maintenance care over the entire period. The purpose of the long-term test was initially to test for coating compatibility, but turned into a long term exposure test to determine the very long term effects of the outdoor elements on Accoya® wood products treated with Remmers coatings.

The coatings applied just once back in 2007 for this test were:

  • 1x Induline SW-900: water-based impregnation

  • 1x Induline GW-360: water-based priming (colour: oak)

  • 2x Induline LW-700: water-based translucent end-coating (colour: oak)

A recent reinspection of the test window was performed by Remmers in March 2021. Remmers said: “After this long most windows show poor coating performance and are not in a very good state. With our coatings on Accoya® wood, it is very different. There is no opening up of joints, no cracking or peeling, and the only sign of nearly a decade and a half of exposure is some very minor flaking over a small area, meaning coated Accoya® really stands the test of time"

These results offer proof that Remmers coatings intensively protects Accoya® wood, eliminating the need for maintenance or reapplication for over a decade.

Sneek Bridge, The Netherlands

Case study

The city of Sneek in the Netherlands has a rich maritime legacy, so when the new landmark entrance was designed, it was important to incorporate this. The design featuring exposed wood beams, representing an upturned fishing boat was brought to life with the help of Accoya® strength graded wood, finished with various Remmers applied coatings.

At the heart of this project, was the need for a durable, sustainable wood type with low CO2 emissions, as all bridges built in the Netherlands must have a lifespan of at least 80 years. To ensure this, approximately 1200m² of Accoya® strength graded wood with various applied coatings from Remmers were used for the construction. The supporting beams of the bridge were made by finger-jointing and laminating to the required dimensions. By using a Remmers coating on Accoya® wood, an extensive service life like this can be achieved with very little maintenance requirements. Additionally there is no risk of swelling or shrinking or opening up of joints, meaning Remmers coated Accoya® really stands the test of time.

    • For professional users only
    • For sealing narrow torn, cut and mitre joints in woodworking and window construction
    • For use by professionals

    Properties

    • Very high solid content: Low shrinkage & early resistance against dry cracks
    • Easy to apply
    • Can be overcoated with conventional water-based varnish and stain systems
    • Dries to form a transparent film
    • Preparation
      • Substrate requirements

Joint sides must be clean, dry, free from grease and capable of bearing a load.

Use on the primer or intermediate coat.

      • Preparations

Preliminary trials are generally advised in order to optimise the workflow and waiting times.

    • Application
      • Temperature of the material, air and substrate: from min. +15 °C to max. +30 °C
      • Gun for sealing compounds
      • Cut off tip at an angle according to the width of the joint and inject, filling the joint completely.

Apply the material with sufficient pressure to the sides of the joint, then smoothen with a moist spatula.

Avoid applying an excess of the fresh compound.

Use a suitable tool or finger cot to level off the filler.

    • Application instructions
      • Drying time: can be worked over after 60 minutes
      • Do not use in connection or expansion joints.

The product is not recommended for contact with solvent-based coatings.

      • Drying

        Drying time (2 x 2 mm joint)
        Approx. 60 minutes (+23 °C/50% RH)

Low temperatures, poor ventilation and high humidity delay drying.

    • Working tools / cleaning
      • Gun for sealing compounds

    • Usage
      • Application rate per 2 x 2 mm / 5ml/m joint section
      • Approx. 5 ml/running metre for a 2 x 2 mm joint cross-section

    • General information
      • Glued joints must be produced properly until glue is discharged over the entire surface area in accordance with the glue manufacturer's instructions.

When applying a subsequent coating on Induline AF-920, the layer must not be made too thick. The layer thicknesses specified in VFF Leaflet HO.03 must be observed.

On large-pored wood, we recommend sealing with AF-920 after applying the intermediate coating.

Current regulations and legal requirements must be taken into account and deviations from these must be agreed separately.
